About The Pacific Amphitheatre, Costa Mesa, CA

The Pacific Amphitheatre is a California amphitheatre located in Costa Mesa, Orange County. The OC Fair & Event Center’s grounds are home to the amphitheatre. Barry Manilow was the inaugural performer when it opened in July 1983 on the location of the fairgrounds’ model railroad facility. The Jefferson Starship performed at the venue on June 30, 1984, and the show was carried live nationwide by the ABC Rock Radio Network.

Prior to its closure in the early 1990s, the fairgrounds were flanked by dense residential developments, and the amphitheatre was the source of several noise complaints from surrounding residents. It reopened in 2003, in conjunction with the annual Orange County Fair, after nearly a decade of closure. Concerts are only staged concurrently with the fair as part of an agreement with local neighbors. The theater has rarely used the “lawn” area since its renovation, essentially cutting seating capacity from 18,765 to 8,500. The seating capacity was lowered to 8,000 in 2015 after more construction and renovations. In addition to concerts, the venue hosts Orange Coast College commencement ceremonies.
