What is a Dental implant?
Dental implant consist of titanium screws of different shapes and sizes (diameter & length) that are positioned in the jaw. After placement, they begin to fuse with the jawbone in a process called Osseointegration which usually takes three to six months. When they are healed and firmly embedded in the jaw then the restoration is placed.
Following a proper diagnostic and surgical protocol, without causing any discomfort to the patient, the titanium screw is placed in the jawbone. Upper jaw restorations are easily achieved. Artificial roots restorations have proved to have the highest rate of success compared to other options as well as being safe. They look and function just like natural teeth, and with proper care can last many years.
But why should patients replace their missing teeth, and what are the benefits of dental implants?
As per AAID (American Academy of Implant Dentistry) states: “Dental implants are the closest you can get to healthy, natural teeth. They allow you to live the way you want to – confidently eating, smiling, laughing, talking, kissing and enjoying all of your everyday activities without worrying about your teeth.”

Dental implant procedure
Titanium post installation
Permanent tooth surgery requires that either one, or multiple titanium posts, depending on the number of teeth being replaced, are inserted into the jawbone using pressure controlled drills.
Bone grafting & other procedures
Some may require certain preparatory procedures before artificial roots can be placed. For example, a patient without sufficient jawbone density may require a graft to create a strong base for the placement. Grafting does affect the timeline as it requires a healing period of 6 to 9 months.
Implant healing time
The healing process usually takes about 3-6 months for bone and gums to fuse around the artificial root during osseointegration. During this recovery phase the patient will have several appointments with the dentist to assess the overall healing.
During this time, the lab will fabricate a customized restoration which can be placed upon the abutment as soon as site is completely healed. Once the new restorations are placed, the patient will have a beautiful smile that can, with proper care, last a lifetime.

Dental implant question & answers
Learn the answers to frequently asked questions about dental implants below:
Am I a good candidate for dental implants?
Patients who do not have periodontal disease, are non-smokers or are willing to stop smoking, and have good oral hygiene are good candidates for the dental implant procedure. Although a dental graft can be constructed, an adequate amount of jaw bone is preferred in patients to make it easier for dental implants to fuse to the jaw bone.
How should I care for my dental implants after the procedure?
Use a soft bristled toothbrush to clean your teeth with gentle strokes. You can also rinse your mouth with mouthwash to remove bacteria. You should also avoid hard or sticky foods for the first few days following your dental implant procedure.
Do dental implants hurt?
Anesthetic is used during the procedure to numb the area receiving the dental implant or implants. Any discomfort that you feel following the procedure should subside within 24 to 48 hours.
