What are Wisdom Teeth?
Third molars or wisdom teeth are a part of the person’s set of teeth. These come late as they usually come out when the person is 17 to 25 years of age. Most of the time, people will have up to four of them, but sometimes it can be fewer than that. There are also cases wherein people have more than four of them. This condition is called supernumerary teeth. The problem with them is that as they emerge, the surrounding teeth are impacted resulting in need for wisdom teeth removal.
If the wisdom teeth become impacted or grew sideways, it usually needs to get removed to maintain oral health.
In all instances, a wisdom tooth does cause pain or problems as they erupt. It is normal for the person to feel slight pain and discomfort when it comes out. The pain and discomfort will stop when it is at its final position.
The problem starts when there isn’t enough room for them to come out. The tooth will start pushing the neighboring teeth.
Moreover, if the wisdom tooth does not come out due to crowding, the food particles will get stuck between the teeth and develop an infection.

Oral Surgery Procedure
If there is a pain, it is because of impacted wisdom teeth, it needs to be removed.
Step 1: The dentist will numb the mouth with the use of a local anesthetic. If you are anxious about the procedure, your dentist will give you a light sedative. A nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or an oral sedative is used to calm you down. Our Office has the latest technology in Laser Dentistry for almost painless procedures.
Step 2: In some extractions, the dentist will make a small incision to the gum so he or she can cut the tooth into smaller pieces for easier extraction. The time it takes to complete the process depends on the condition of the teeth and the health of the patient.
Step 3: Once the teeth are extracted, the person may feel swelling and discomfort. This normally disperses after several days.

Why are Wisdom Teeth Removed?
They are the last teeth to come out. If it comes out aligned and gums are healthy and there is no tooth decay, wisdom tooth extraction is no longer needed. There are instances where the wisdom tooth comes out with issues. In such a case, tooth extraction is necessary particularly if the tooth comes out misaligned or it affects the gum tissue of the person. It can also happen when the teeth get lodged in the gum or the bone.
Misaligned teeth shouldn’t be ignored like when they come out halfway. The opening is around the tooth will allow the bacteria to breed and thrive. This could lead to many potential problems including infection. Symptoms of infection include swelling and stiffness in the infected area, pain, and fever. The pressure of the tooth that is coming out could cause the neighboring ones to shift into position. Another serious problem is when the wisdom tooth emerges, it causes tumors or cysts to grow around the impacted area. This could eventually destroy the jawbone. When it gets extracted, it will not cause any of these problems anymore. See our services for: General Dentistry
The ADA states the following “The blood clots that form in the tooth socket is an important part of the normal healing process. You should avoid doing things that might disturb the clot”.
here’s is what to do for Recovery:
Apply a cold compress right away to minimize swelling and inflammation. Do this every 25 minutes, 3 or more times a day until the swelling subsides.
Bleeding after the procedure is normal. When you experience bleeding, all you have to do is place a cotton or preferably gauze pad on top of the affected area for 30 minutes after the surgery.
It is recommended that you do not eat, drink, or speak the first few hours after the extraction. Rest for the rest of the day. Blood clotting inside the mouth happens slower compared to when you got a wound in your skin. This is the reason you should avoid disrupting the blood-forming inside your mouth. Only use a straw when drinking and do not spit. No smoking for the first 24 hours. Brush and clean gently taking extra attention to that extracted area.
When the bleeding stops, drink a lot of water in order to restore the lost fluids. You are only allowed to eat soft foods at this stage. Chewing softly is important. This is due to the fact that the food might dislodge the blood clot. Also, avoid drinking carbonated drinks.
Take the medications and antibiotics as prescribed by your dentist. If you have taken strong medication after the procedure, do not drive alone. Have someone to drive with you on the way home. You may not be at your optimum strength at this time so it is best for you to not operate any machinery. Some medications can have side effects on alcohol, so avoid drinking alcohol until you are completely healed.
All of these aftercare instructions are important because you want to prevent a tooth infection, periodontal disease, alveolar osteitis, and any other dentistry complications.
