Dental Implants vs Braces – Which Should Be First?

Dental braces should always be placed before dental implants. Your bite varies during Braces treatment and dental implants are manufactured according to your final bite. Dental implants are surgically inserted metal posts or frames that can hold dentures, crowns, bridges, or other dental prosthetics and serve as anchors for braces. Oral braces are orthodontic appliances that straighten teeth and place them near a person’s bite, all while enhancing dental health.

Dental Implants vs Braces

Should You Get Braces Before or After Dental Implants?

If you need both Braces and dental implants, it is frequently advised that you have braces treatment first. However, this might not always be achievable if you are missing all or the majority of your teeth. In some situations, implants could be recommended initially. In these situations, we would consider the patient’s particular requirements to decide on the sequence in which our team would administer the treatments.

Braces Before Dental Implants

While it is technically feasible to move teeth to support implants, it is typically preferable to have orthodontic treatment first to guarantee that the teeth are in their ideal position. This is so that it cannot move like a natural tooth after being implanted. Since there are no ligaments and the implant is locked into the jaw, teeth cannot be realigned.

For some people, orthodontic treatment may even be necessary before implant placement to provide room for the new tooth and maybe realign the roots of neighboring teeth.

Dental Implants before Braces

It could make it more logical to install the dental implant before starting orthodontic therapy. It is acceptable to place the implant before braces if the teeth around the implant are not the focus of orthodontic treatment. The patient would probably have the implant before the braces are fitted when an implanted tooth is required to act as an anchor point so that the proper forces are applied to realign the other teeth.

As we age, our teeth naturally shift toward the front of the mouth. Over time, the implant may start to seem odd. Braces are used to reposition the teeth around the implant if it is appropriately positioned concerning the surrounding teeth.

It will seem out of place after the rest of your teeth are in alignment if the implant has to be in the optimal position. There is a choice to be made in the situation. You can decide to have a little imperfect smile or remove the implant, go through orthodontic treatment, and then have the implant put back in when the braces are removed.

If you decide to do implants before Braces, then you need to see the dental implant healing stages. Implants healing time needs to be then added to your overall plan before Braces are put in.

What are Dental Implants and Braces?

While braces (orthodontics) will move teeth in a particular direction, culminating in the closure of the space left by the tooth’s loss, implants will directly replace the lost tooth.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are posts that are surgically inserted into the upper or lower jaw. Dental implants offer a reliable base for prosthetic teeth. Once placed, dental implants enable the dentist to attach prosthetic teeth to them.

You will need dental implants to replace missing teeth but cannot do it with dentures, bridges, or crowns. It is essential to replace a lost tooth since the consequences of doing nothing while having a tooth removed or lost over time become substantially more severe.

Braces

Small metal brackets are bonded to your teeth to form dental braces, connected by a wire that a dentist or orthodontist adjusts to move and straighten your teeth, so they look better.

Braces are dental appliances that straighten out issues with your teeth, such as crowding, crookedness, or alignment.

Is Getting Braces Necessary for Dental Implant Placement?

When a patient’s bone structure has altered over time, Braces are frequently necessary to provide a place for dental implants. Once they are in your mouth, dental implants cannot move, so even after orthodontic treatment, the implants won’t move. Due to a process known as “osseointegration,” which connects the surface of an implant with the normal bone for structure and function, dental implants cannot be transferred. For this reason, we install dental implants once the orthodontic treatment is finished.

Can Dental Implants Replace Braces?

Yes. Instead of braces, dental implants may be used to close spaces between teeth. Each situation is unique and requires careful attention.

Who is Not a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

When a patient has had severe bone volume loss due to illness or the prolonged absence of natural teeth, they are not a suitable candidate for dental implants. For an implant to be effectively supported, extra bone may be required.
